Starbuck's got a gun and a cigar

sadie-the-dependable-skeleton:

I always thought it was interesting that gender wasn’t an issue in the BSG universe. What colony someone came from was, but gender wasn’t brought up. I was never sure why that was (Moore didn’t want to deal with that particular can of worms? That society just happened to evolve that way?) But I would have loved to know more about it.

I think it takes a lot of glossing over and willful ignorance of things that happened in BSG to say that gender wasn’t an issue. It’s perhaps arguable that the world of the show was intended to show a much more egalitarian future, but the show wasn’t without problematic elements and the treatment of women characters by the writers was often reflective of real-world misogyny and some shitty tropes about women characters. Hell, BSG even had a mystical pregnancy.

I didn’t watch the show super critically the first time through, but I can think of several issues off the top of my head with how women were portrayed and treated. I guess this is a good excuse to watch it again and take a bunch of notes and maybe write about it.

Also, because (problems and all) the show was legit awesome, and Laura Roslin is one of my favorite TV ladies ever.

I definitely understand and agree with your points. I would also love to read your write up on the show. Maybe I should...
