My mom and I were talking about this just yesterday. I said that if they want to teach children the bible, they should teach them a bit of every religion (and atheism too), so that the kids can decide what they want to believe in.

That’s how I feel about it. My partner and I are both atheists, but we talk to my daughter pretty frequently (whenever she has questions, which is often) about religion and what other people believe.

As a parent, I totally understand wanting your children to believe the things you do—I know I do, anyway, because I think what I believe is RIGHT—but I don’t want my daughter to think the way I do because that’s the way I think. I want her to think that way because she’s had a chance to examine all the alternatives, learn a bit about the world, and come to her own conclusions.

I find it really worrisome that so many parents rely on indoctrination to impart their values and opinions to their children. I would much rather teach free thought and critical thinking than obedience to dogma.
