Today, someone tried to tell me that advertising is “corporate welfare” that just lines the pockets of rich CEOs so they can buy yachts and stuff. Then they tried to talk politics with me, less than 5 minutes into the phone call.

I’m not one of those people who thinks no one should ever discuss religion or politics, but I definitely DON’T want to discuss it with a prospective client whose name I just learned like 30 seconds ago. Who does that?

I just want you to spend $800 on an ad campaign, dude. It’s cool if you don’t want to, but just let me get off the phone so I can try to sell it to someone else so I don’t have to go on poor person welfare.

Knowing that LEGO used to create wonderful ads like this just makes their recent decisions to create condescendingly gendered sets for girls even more sad.

"Big changes are coming to grade school report cards in one Colorado school district. With a $70 million budget deficit looming, Jefferson County Public Schools officials have agreed to include advertisements for Colorado’s nonprofit education savings plan, CollegeInvest, underneath student grades. In return, the school system will receive $90,000 over three years."

"

I get this idea that we, as geeks, are expected to rise above the common herd that are influenced by advertising and self-hate. We’re so much cleverer than that, so much more accepting! We were the fat kids in high school!

But we’re not. After all, geek boys lusts after the thin ones, every geek girl is bombarded with pictures of thin Leia, thin Xena, thin Sailor Scouts. Comics portray thin people as good, fat people as bad. There’s a reason Desire is slim and Despair is fat. Women get the same role-models in geek culture as they do in the rest of the world, but that culture is determined not to address this, nor to address the problems it might cause us.
